MIDDELEEUWSE BEDIJKING AAN DE RAND VAN DE DOLLARD BIJ ZUIDBROEK (GR.)

Samenvatting

The area of Zuidbroek-Scheemda, flooded by late medieval transgressions and covered with so-called Dollard clay, shows some of its older medieval drainage system during the construction of the new motorway A7. It was found that the valley of the main streamlet Oude Ae had been blocked by clay deposits in pre-medieval times already. As a consequence, our interpretation of the hydrological measures taken by the medieval peasants to free their land from water coming from the adjacent Bourtanger Moor should be revised. Here the find of an artificial outlet [zijltje], flanked by low dikes and lying underneath the later Dollard dike, is discussed.
