Samenvatting

Dr. Max Frei demonstrated a large number of pollen types on the Shroud of Turin. These pollen types were identified with the help of modern reference material obtained from locations that might have been visited by the Shroud. Frei concluded from the results of the palynological investigations that the Shroud of Turin was authentic. In this paper Dr. Max Frei's pollen identifications are discussed. It is the opinion of the author that the identification level of the various pollen types is much too high. The majority of the types cannot be ascribed to plant species but only to plant families or genera found all over the Mediterranean and the Near East. Frei's circular reasoning is caused by the restricled way he collected his reference material. Next to the question which pollen was found on the Shroud, the question of the absence of olive pollen is raised.
