Samenvatting

In 1990 a gold omega-shaped pendant measuring about 2 cm was found in the village-terp of Wijnaldum. There are some scratches on the back, which may be runes reading hiwi, which means mater familias. Pendanis of this sort, but without runes, are found in 6th-century women's graves in Mittelfranken in Germany (Werner, 1935). These are probably of Lombardic origin. The runes are not typically Anglo-Frisian; the h-rune is single-barred and the w-rune has a remarkable shape: the headstaff and the pocket at the top are carved in one continuous stroke: the packet is not closed. This may be explained by the way the rune was cut: starting from the bottom.
