HET VROEG-MIDDELEEUWSE AARDEWERK VAN TRITSUM, GEM. FRANEKERADEEL (FR.)
Samenvatting
The terp Tritsum w as excavated by Waterbolk in 1959-61. Recently a provisional study of the early medieval pottery revealed that the ratio between imported (wheelthrown) and native (handmade) pottery is in favour of the latter category, whereas in other coastal sites the outcome is the reverse. The bulk of the native pottery is tempered with organic matter. Up till now this trait was thought to be limited to the Roman period. A few 'Anglo-Saxon' pots are of the same fabric. This pottery can be dated between the 5th and the 7th century. Its distribution within the terp shows a concentration in the southern part. The amount of early medieval sherds (c. 2000) is negligible compared with the number of sherds of the foregoing periods.
