'EEN GRENSGEVAL': ARCHEOLOGISCH ONDERZOEK NAAR HET BLOKHUIS WEERDENBRAS (GR.) (1505-1516)
Samenvatting
In June 1992 the BAI conducled an excavation at the late medieval blockhouse Weerdenbras (1505-1516) near Groninger Punt. This fortification played an important role in the reconquest of the city of Groningen in the Saxon wars. The results of the archaeological and historical research show that Weerdenbras was an earthen fortification which, in partial contrast to the contemporary wooden blockhouses, shows a resemblance in form and function to later field fortifications (redoubts). The blockhouse of Weerdenbras can be considered a transition to a more modern type of warfare.
