HET OUDE KERKHOF VAN NOORDWOLDE (FR.)
Samenvatting
In 1920 the physician and amateur archaeologist Dr. J.J. Mulder completed a modest excavation begun by J.H. Holwerda in the municipality of Noordwolde (Friesland). Remains of a medieval church were uncovered during house-construction activities. Thanks to some detailed drawings made by Mulder during the levelling of the churchyard and information from contemporary newspapers, we can assemble the archaeological information: an 11th- or 12th century church made of tuff had been built in a circular churchyard, surrounded by a ditch. At some point in the later Middle Ages the whole village, which was situated in a raised-bog area, was relocated to higher, Pleistocene grounds.
