Samenvatting

Following the archaeological survey of the year before, trial excavations were carried out in the winter of 1991/92 on the essen (late- and post-medieval arable land) east of Hooghalen. At each of these locations traces of medieval occupation dating from about 800-1200 were found. From the results of the survey and the excavations it has become clear that the scatter of surface finds does not necessarily correspond with the location and dating of the traces found in the subsoil. In determining the location for trial trenches it is therefore necessary to use not only the results of the archaeological survey but other information as well. The fact that medieval settlement structures still relate to present-day features of the landscape makes it possible to use various other sources of information successfully. The status of archaeological monument has been recommended for parts of the essen of Hooghalen.
