Samenvatting

The southern part of the island of Sulawesi (Indonesia) is well-known for its vertebrate fossils and stone artifacts. Contrary to the original idea, it may be assumed that the fossils date from the Plio-Pleistocene, and the artifacts from the second half of the Upper Pleistocene, thus to be correlated with the first bands of Homo sapiens to reach the island. Mention is also made of a newly discovered fossil locality in the northern part of Sulawesi, where fieldwork is now in progress. The stratigraphy suggests parallels with the southern sites.
