EEN BRIEF MET GEVOLGEN
Samenvatting
At the turn of the century same local men of standing in Groningen strove to stimulate research into the prehistoric dwelling mounds in the marine-clay district. The in-depth publication by a farmer and his son, J.O. and J. Elema, about their observations at Toornwerd was one of the results. It led to a fundamental and vivid discussion between J.O. Elema and J.M. van Bemmelen, a retired professor of chemistry, who was very interested in this matter and had some influential connections. A letter, written in 1907 by Elema about the inroads made in the terp of Dorkwerd near the town of Groningen was decisive in prompting systematic excavations.
