Samenvatting

This article deals with the preliminary results of an excavation performed in a comparatively young quarter of the old town centre of Groningen, which was once enclosed by the first circle of town ramparts of the 13th century. It was found that the construction of the earliest dwellings, timber-built on a foundation of boulders, occurred in the course of the 14th century along the Schuitemakersstraat. In the centuries to follow, the construction of brick houses was more or less guided by the orientation of these first edifices. It was not until the 17th century that people began to settle along the Reitemakersrijge, an area which up till then had only served as stock yards.
