Samenvatting

On the embankment of the former Fivel river near Westeremden, a raised site was partly excavated on 31 August and 1 September. Habitation in this area started after dikes had been built in the 11th century. It is evident that in late medieval times people settled on higher places in newly reclaimed land, for instance on natural levees and even on top of older dikes. At this particular site traces of buildings had vanished, due to levelling activities in the past. Some pits and two wells were the last traces of human activity in the past. The oldest finds date back to the 12th- 14th centuries; the youngest, from the 17th century, mark the end of habitation.
