Samenvatting

In 1843 a megalithic tomb was discovered when a burial mound near Exlo was excavated. Before 1869 the tomb was destroyed. During the Second World War a subterranean shelter of 2x2x2 m was constructed in the disturbed centre of the mound by two locals in hiding. Excavation in 1993 showed that the megalithic tomb had consisted of three orthostats and a capstone, and therefore was a dolmen. It was constructed in a 1.3 m deep pit, and had a 1.4 m high cover mound of sand. Sherds of c. 40 pots, largely belonging to Brindley's Horizon l, were found in the disturbed soil. In the Middle Bronze Age the mound was heightened to c. 2 m, and surrounded by a carefully constructed wall of heavy boulders. Later erosion, a layer of driftsand and the soil dumps of 1843-69 gave the mound its present appearance.
