Samenvatting

In some cases ships' inventories not only yield information about the crew on board, but also about the possible shipping area and home port of the ship. It is suggested that the production area of the pewter and some of the stoneware found on board of a ship excavated in lot B6 in the Noordoostpolder (the Netherlands) is indicative of the home port of the vessel. The pewter was made in the town of Groningen, the stoneware in the area of Duingen (Germany). The distribution of Duingen stoneware in the Netherlands is confined to the province of Groningen. The possibility that we are dealing with a freighter from Groningen is supported by the kind of cargo, tiles and rooftiles, which were often transporfed to the Baltic. At a later date at any rate, the Baltic was the typical trading area of skippers from Groningen. This might be an early example of this trade.
