TRESINGE (GR.) VIA DE BOOR: VEEN, KLEI, WOUDGROND EN HET KLOOSTER GERMANIA
Samenvatting
The village of Thesinge lies in the so-called woudgebied near Groningen. The top layer of the marine clay in this area is dark and humic. This and the low elevation of the area gave rise to a peat layer which covered the whole area and prevented the sea during Duinkerke II from depositing sediments. The peat has disappeared through oxidation due to arable farming, which has caused the surface to sink beneath the level of the surrounding marine-clay area where Duinkerke II sediments had been deposited. From the 12th until the 17th century, Thesinge was the location of the Benedictine convent Germania. Beneath the choir of the former church of this convent, a layer of peat was found. The centre of the village lies nearly one metre higher than the surrounding area. The present study, carried out by boring, was made to see if there was more peat left in Thesinge and if so, where and how this was situated. Also an attempt was made to find pedological features indicating the boundaries of the convent.
