ROMEINSE KOLONISATIE TEN ZUIDEN VAN ROME; DE SEZZE SURVEY, ITALIË

Samenvatting

The spring and autumn of 1994 saw the first fieldwork campaign of the Pontine Region Project within the framework of the new research project 'Roman colonisation south of Rome, a comparative survey of three early romanised landscapes', based on earlier survey work of the project. This year parts of the landscape around Sezze, ancient Setia, were intensively surveyed, resulting in the discovery of a very dense rural pattern in the plain below the Roman colony and on the slopes of the Monti Lepini. It appears that the landscape around Sezze was from early Republican times onwards (c. 350 BC) rapidly brought info cultivation by the Romans to boost local agricultural production close to Rome.
