Samenvatting

An almond-shaped handaxe was found near Oldeholtwolde in the province of Friesland The findspot (a ploughed field) is located at the southern edge of the Tjonger valley. No other artefacts have been found at the site. The handaxe can be ascribed to the Late Acheulian; a dating in the Eemian seems probable. The tip is broken off - possibly as a result of use (butchering?). The basal part of the handaxe has the form of a core. The base consists of a transverse face 3 cm thick; using this face as a striking platform, longer flakes had been removed from both sides of the handaxe. The handaxe is quite heavily weathered; surface modifications include white and brown patinas, windgloss, scratches, pressure cones, and slight rounding of edges and ridges. Most of these phenomena must have originated during the Upper Pleniglacial.
