Samenvatting

In 1921 a peculiar pattern of large square pits (1x1 m) was uncovered at Schipborg (Dr.). The author suggests that they belonged to a late medieval defensive system, perhaps of rudimentory form. In its complete form such a system (landweer) would have consisted of a low, densely overgrown bank, flanked by ditches and on the outside accompanied by an arrangement of pits of the type mentioned (struikelgaten, stumbling pits), to hamper penetration by mounted enemy troops or bands of robbers.
