WIJGESCHENKEN VOOR DE GODIN
Samenvatting
During the recent excavations in the Athena sanctuary on the summit of the 'Timpone della Motta', a hill c. 15 km to the north of ancient Sybaris (Calabria), two different sets of votive offerings were found. Within and around postholes of a 7th-century BC temple, offerings to the goddess dating from the second half of the 7th century BC were found. After this temple was levelled, the postholes and votive objects were covered with a thick layer of gravel. On this gravel platform a new temple was erected and near it votive offerings dating from the latter half of the 6th century BC were dedicated to the goddess. The stratum beneath the last temple contained much bronze scrap; its good condition indicates a purposeful accumulation of bronze by priests or a foundry, not a destruction.
