The earliest certain evidence of beekeeping originates from Egypt. It consists of scenes depicted around 2500 BC. Beekeeping today is still very important in Egypt. In the 18th and 19th centuries AD there is documentary evidence of a transhumance of hives from Upper Egypt down the Nile to Lower Egypt. Migratory beekeeping was already mentioned in Ptolemaic times.
