NAALDEN IN DE HOOIBERG. VERSLAG VAN EEN OPGRAVING IN KRIA, DE VOGELKOP, IRIAN JAYA, INDONESIË
Samenvatting
During the summer of 1995 an archaeological investigation was carried out in the Ayamaru region in the Bird's Head Peninsula of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. During a brief survey several potential sites were discovered, all of them located in limestone caves. Two of the caves were selected for excavation. Same preliminary results of the excavation in one of these, Kria, are presented here. Among the finds are stone tools, animal and human bone, shell and eggshell fragments and bone points. Radiocarbon samples are still being analyzed to provide dates for the site. Although the evidence gained from the excavation has not yet been thoroughly studied it is clear that this site will provide an important contribution to the understanding of the Bird's Head's prehistory and will show the potential of further archaeological research in this area.
