Experimental work at Lejre Research Centre in 1995 is described; it was a statistical inves­tigation of compact flint scatters. The aim was to distinguish between knapping residues and dumps. Five knapping experiments and six dumping experiments were executed, and all artefacts were measured in grid cells of 10 x 10 cm. It was found that dumping scatters have a homogeneous internal structure, while knapping residues are more heterogeneous. The difference can be summarized by Kendall's Coefficient of Concordance: W. For knapping residues, W is smaller than 0.6; for dumps, W is larger than 0.6 and always significant.
