HET MIDDENPALEOLITHISCHE VONDSTCOMPLEX VAN NIEUWEGEIN (UTR.)
Samenvatting
This article presents a general description of a collection of suction-dredged artifacts from Nieuwegein (Central Netherlands). On the basis of the (scarce) occurrence of the Levallais technique and various types of scraper, the assemblage can be placed in the Middle Palaeolithic. In total more than 400 artifacts were studied, mostly unretouched flakes, blades and cores. Within the category of tools, various types of scraper dominate. Furthermore there are same backed knives, notched flakes and combination tools. No handaxes or points were found. The somewhat archaic appearance of the collection seems to indicate that we are mainly dealing with a place were flint nodules were collected and worked. This is probably also the case with several other sites in the region. Most of the artifacts are slightly rolled and possess a black (underwater) patina. At present, we cannot place the complex in a narrower time-range than Early Saalian to Early Weichselian.
