Samenvatting

In recent years, W.H. Calvin has popularized the idea that handaxes were 'projectiles'. Though handaxes undoubtedly served a wide range of functions, their use as 'hunting discus' seems improbable. Use-wear studies have shown that the older Acheulean handaxes were used, among other things, as butchering knives. The uses of the later and smaller Mousterian handaxes included wood-working. Same handaxes seem to have had an additional function, as hammer, shovel or core.
