KONINKLIJKE PATRONAGE: DE EDELSMID VAN WIJNALDUM (FR.)
Samenvatting
In processing the very last metal finds of the 1991-1993 excavations at the terp at Wijnaldum in Friesland, a die was discovered for patterning the goldfoil of early medieval garnet jewellery. It displays a special boxed pattern. It was found in the context of refuse from a jeweller's workshop, near the famous Wijnaldum brooch. In 1985 Mazo Karras predicted the existence of such a workshop in Frisia, under royal patronage.
