Samenvatting

Megalithic monuments are a common element in the landscape of Alentejo. There are more than two hundred dolmens or Antas, in the area of Évora-Reguengos de Monsaraz. They are of two different types, with or without a passage. They may share their mound with a late Neolithic burial monument, the Tholoi. Among the grave goods one may find flint, pottery and other objects such as schist plaques, idol plaques, and carved votive crooks, which are characteristic of the megalithic culture in this area. Menhirs are also present. in several cases the stone is decorated with a range of motifs that include representations of the sun and motifs forming a stellar pattern. Thus, it can be concluded that between the 4th and 3rd millenium BC the area of Évora-Reguengos de Monsaraz was densely occupied, as is shown by the large number and variety of not only megalithic monuments but also settlements.
