Meijer in 1997 is taken as an occasion to reminisce about the archaeological situation in Groningen in the years 1947-1949, when Professor A.E. van Giffen combined his professorship at Groningen University with his directorship of the newly-founded State Service for Archaeological Investigations in the Netherlands (ROB).
