DE OLDEKERK (GR.)
Samenvatting
At the site of the abandoned cemetery of Oldekerk (Gr.), an excavation revealed the foundation trenches of the former, earliest church of the settlement. The building, with a nave of c. 15 x 10 m, a circa 9 m long, slightly smaller choir and a tower measuring 5 x 5 m, had been erected in the second half of the 12th century in a peat-bog landscape. To enable building in such conditions foundation trenches had been dug out down to the sandy subsoil; these were filled with sods under the walls of the nave and tower with sand under the choir walls.
