EEN BEENBEWERKER EN EEN SMID, BEWONERS VAN DE WIERDE TOLWEG-ZUID/KINK HORNSTERWEG (GR.)
Samenvatting
Amateur archaeologist J. Tillema observed the debris of a bone-working shop and a forge, both from the 12th-14th centuries AD, at the terp Tolweg-Zuid/Kinkhornsterweg (Loppersum, province of Groningen), which had recently been ploughed. A study af the finds shows that the bone-worker made composite combs from cattle metapodia and spindle whorls from cattle mandibles and scapulae. The smith worked pieces of iron bloom, which result from primary iron production, and used or reused copper/copper-alloys. He made or repaired everyday tools for domestic or farm use. The find demonstrates the high susceptibility of the terp sites to erosion.
