Samenvatting

In 1998, one of a newly discovered group of burial mounds in the Westerwolde area (province of Groningen) was partly excavated, together with its immediate surroundings. The burial mound proved to be a Brandhügel, erected between 400
and 200 BC. Soon after its erection, the area must have been abandoned, a process accelerated by rapid peat growth resulting in the Bourtanger Moor. By the 5th century AD the raised bog had covered the barrows. This peat blanket, still present, enables us to investigate not only this funerary monument but also an adjacent Celtic field and human activities on the banks of the nearby brook, a fossil branch of the Ems river. Our immediate aim is to develop instruments to preserve the ensemble for future research.
