Samenvatting

The Rijksdienst voor het Oudheidkundig Bodemonderzoek (ROB, State Service for Archaeological Research) is an organization in a process of change. Since 1998 the Service focusses on the preservation of archaeological remains in situ. This has meant a drastic change in the organization of the Service. One of the main activities is to collect knowledge about different aspects of preservation and to make this knowledge available to planners, policymakers and archaeologists. Another feature is that the organization can and must operate in the field of urban and landscape planning. This implies that aspects of planning, preservation and the law must be taken into account in the Services advice to local authorities. The ROB has as yet only started to develop this structure. In the coming years further changes will be necessary as and when, for example, new legislation comes into effect.
