VAN ZAAD NAAR COCON
Samenvatting
The site Lage Blok was excavated in the autumn of 1999 by Archaeological Research and Consultancy (ARC). This excavation took place on account of the planned 'Betuweroute' railway line. Samples were taken for palaeobotanical examination. The samples came from postholes, pits and a crevasse gully. In six samples from the gully an apparently unknown seed was found. It is 1.23 mm lang and 0.57 mm wide. It has 5 to 7 longitudinal ribs; between these longitudinal ribs are transverse ribs. The bottom is flat and a cell pattern is visible. It turned out to be no seed but a cocoon of Piscicola geometra, a leech. Because of its shape, the ribs and the cell pattern at the back, the cocoon is easily mistaken for a seed.
