DON QUICHOTTE IN EXLOO (DR.)
Samenvatting
An excavation in 1976 in the peat-bog area of the Hunze valley twenty-four years later became the focus point in a discussion about its interpretation. At the site a pavement of boulders on branches was discovered, partly lined by heavy beams and fixed with potes driven into the peat, sometimes as deep as the Pleistocene subsoil. At the time of the excavation it was interpreted as the foundation of a windmill, an interpretation mainly based on the presence of two beams both perforated with a row of holes. A sample of oak taken from a pote was radiocarbon-dated to the 11th century. The results were never published, but the report of an eye-witness in the year 2000 raised certain questions. The original drawings and other documentation suggest that more probably part of a trackway was discovered. It is clear that some of the beams originate from a demolished structure.
