Samenvatting

In August and September 2000 part of the terp of Englum (province of Groningen) was excavated by the archaeological institutes of the universities of Groningen and Amsterdam. Habitation from the Middle fron Age until recently could be established on the evidence of pottery. Very interesting were some finds with a possibly ritual meaning. One of them was a grave in the natural salt-marsh soil, that was accompanied by same grave-like features with the bones af a cod and a dog in pots. However, the relationship between the grave and the grave-like features could not be determined. ln a thick layer of dung from the 3rd ar 4th century BC, eight human skulls were found. They all lacked their mandibles. A ritual meaning seems likely, although non-ritual explanations can as yet not be excluded. A thorough study af all the data and material remains from the excavation will without doubt increase our knowledge af the way people lived in the coastal area af the North of the Netherlands.
