ARCHEOBOTANISCH ONDERZOEK VAN DE 'WESTERHAVEN' TE GRONINGEN (GR.)

Samenvatting

At Groningen, the former harbour 'Westerhaven ' was excavated in 1998 in order to make an under­ground car-park. During this work Holocene de­posits overlying the sands ofthe Peelo Formation (c. 8 m below NAP) could be investigated. From these salt-marsh deposits, consisting of sand and clay, 4 samples were taken. Sample 4 consisfed of displaced peat, which was enriched with botani­cal material from the coastal area, such as Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima and Matricaria maritima. As to the age of these samples, it proved im­possible to make an accurate estimate.
