Samenvatting

The Pleistocene landscape of the Drenthe tilt plateau extends north info the provinee of Groningen but here it is covered by younger sediments. Neolithic artefacts which have been found near Winsum are an indication that the area was occupied during the Neolithic. In 2000 a small-scale exeavation was conducted by the Groningen lnstitute of Archaeology in a trench for the construction of a pumping-station in the Wetsingermaar. At a depth of 1.65 m below Ordnance Datum a Neolithic site was found, covered by 2.5 m of marine clay. Ceramic sherds, charcoal and flint material were collected from a black layer at the top of the Pleistocene. The artefacts possibly belong to a late phase of the Swifterbant culture or an early phase of the TRB culture. Charcoal from the occupation layer was radiocarbon-dated: 4700 BP.
