SIBA2000, VOORBEREIDEND LANDSCHAPSONDERZOEK IN DE SIBARITIDE
Samenvatting
This article presents research recently conducted by GIA staff and students near the town of Francavilla Marittima (Sibaritide region, Calabria, Italy), in preparation for a programme of landscape-archaeological research around the protohistoric settlement and cult site of the Timpone della Motta. The research focused on the evaluation, by both field and labaratory work, of the archaeological data sets currently available for the area that were compiled in previous surveys by the GIA and in the I960s by Lorenzo Quilici and others. The possibilities for studying highland exploitation were evaluated by following subrecent transhumance routes and revisiting known sites along these. Experiments with a portable digitalfield registrafion system were conducfed in order to develop appropriate, efficient and accurate field methods for such surveys.
