EEN STENENKRING EN EEN ZWARTE PLEK: HET 'CHEDDARIEN' VAN ZEIJEN (DR.)
Samenvatting
Opinion has always been divided as to whether or not the Creswellian, a well-known phenomenon in England, existed also on the continent. The best candidate in the Netherlands for a Creswellian status is without doubt the site at Zeijen. It was discovered in 1945, and excavated in 1949 under the direction of J. Luinge. A probable tent ring consisting of large stones came to light, and at about 2 m outside its presumed entrance a probable hearth was also observed. Most flint artefacts came from the topsoil; they were sifted per square metre. The flints clustered near the hearth, and hardly any occurred inside the ring of stones. The occupation at Zeijen therefore probably took place during the summer. Among the tools, a series of Cheddar and Creswell points are especially noteworthy (fig. 3); there are no Federmesser points. Among the other tools, one blade with a rounded end was recognized: a possible fire-maker; it occurred very close to the assumed hearth.
