ARCHEOBOTANISCH ONDERZOEK IN 'DE HUNZE', GEMEENTE GRONINGEN
Samenvatting
East af a medieval dike along the river Hunze near the city of Groningen was situated a 'mound' that needed to be removed, because of the construction of the housing estate 'De Hunze'. Six samples from two periods were analysed. In the first period, around the 14th century, occupation took the form af a small castle and in the second, around the 17th/18th century, that of a farm. Between these two periods there was a remarkable change in land use: in the 14th century arable farmland and in the 17th century and later, grassland. From the 14th century there was also a remarkable seed: Silybum marianum. lt is the firs t time that this seed has been found in Groningen in such an early context. The plant is native to the Mediterranean area.
