  • H.T. Waterbolk

This article presents a broad historical sketch of archaeological activities and nature conservancy in the province of Drenthe, for a large part based on the author’s memories and personal experiences. Starting with the explorations of C.J.C. Reuvens in 1833, this overview discusses the profound changes in scientific focus and organizational structure of the archaeological discipline both in and outside Drenthe, up to the present situation. The notable contributions by various persons (including G.H. Voerman and A.E. van Giffen) are discussed against the background of the evolution of society and science during this period.
