Samenvatting

Recently two finds of Caroligian weapon graves were newly discovered in old documentation: three graves alongside each other in the dwelling mound (wierde) of Wadwerd (Groningen) and probably two graves in that of Ondersma near Hallum (Friesland). The swords were poorly described, but comparison with other finds makes a date in the 8th century most probable. Dating from that century, a remarkable number of weapon graves have been found. The phenomenon is related to the conquest of Frisia by the Frankish kings in the same century. After the firm establishment of Frankish rule, the custom of weapon burials disappeared.
