Samenvatting

During the extensive excavations at Midlaren-'De Bloemert' an isolated Late Palaeolithic point was found (fig. 1). Though the shoulder is slightly concave, it is nevertheless concluded that the point was probably left behind by a Creswellian rather than a Hamburgian hunter. The argument is that the oblique truncation of the point is relatively short: the T/L-index is 28.0 (this index expresses the length of the truncation (T) as a percentage of the total length (L) of the point: see fig. 2). Hamburgian points, by contrast, tend to have relatively long truncations. Based on a sample of 72 Hamburgian and 36 Creswell-points from the northern Netherlands, the mean T/L-value of Hamburgian points is 43.5, that of Creswell-points 28.4 (fig. 3). It is suggested that this difference relects a stilistic preference, even though it is statistical – not absolute.
