Het driehoekige vuistbijltje van Hengelo (Ov.)
Samenvatting
A small subtriangular handaxe was found in 1983 on the bank of the Twenthekanaal at the Thales plant in Hengelo. Its original location and stratigraphic provenance remain somewhat unclear. Typologically the handaxe can be attributed to the Mousterian of Acheulian Tradition type A, which is dated to the Early Glacial of the Weichselian. In the subsequent Lower Pleniglacial this area must have been uninhabitable. Neanderthals visited the northern Netherlands for the last time during the Middle Pleniglacial, during which period they left behind several leaf points.
