Samenvatting

Leeuwarden – De Kelders (Friesland): achaeological supervision during the construction of a restaurant cellar. In the centre of Leeuwarden, the development of a restaurant with a terrace next to a town canal prompted an archaeological investigation. Its location is on the edge of one of the terpen of Leeuwarden which had been inhabited since the Carolingian period. In one occupation layer, finds dating to the 12th – 14th centuries were found, including pottery, faunal remains and leather. The investigation could not confirm the supposed origin of the canal as a natural watercourse. Etymologicaly, the name of the site means “marshy area”, which indicates that it was always low-lying land.
