Samenvatting

The Southeast Gate of Halos (Greece). The excavation of the South-East Gate of Hellenistic New Halos was continued in 2005. The gate was in use in the period 302-265 BC, and the complex was reused as a farmstead in the period 260-220 BC after the gate’s destruction by an earthquake in 265 BC. After seven field campaigns in the period 1995-2005, a definitive plan of the remains of the gate could be made. The whole site was cleaned in 2005 and aerial photographs were taken, which provide a good view of the large complex. Characteristic of this type of gate is a central courtyard, enclosed by two towers, side walls and spur-walls. A close parallel of the South-East Gate of New Halos is the gate in the Pnyx-Mouseion saddle in Athens. Both a small coin hoard which came to light in the South-East Gate in 1995, and also the fixed die position of the city’s coins support the idea that Demetrios Poliorketes was the founder of New Halos.
