Samenvatting

Stone axes from Groningen clay. The North-Groningen marine-clay coastal area was not inhabitated until the Early Iron Age. Nevertheless finds of Neolithic and Bronze Age axes and other early artefacts are known. Ten such objects came from dwelling mounds (wierden), and three from the vicinity of such mounds. The authors suggest that most of these were deposited here by Iron-Age and medieval people as a side product of collecting stones (in areas with Pleis-tocene soils) to be used for various and often unknown purposes. Only in a few cases does accidental transport offer a likely explanation.
