Wüstungen in the Woudgebied: a case-study of lost settlements in Groningen. In this article the German term Wüstung (deserted medieval village, DMV) is discussed. In contrast to neighbouring countries, archaeology in the Netherlands does not commonly employ the concept. The case-study of Wüstungen in the Woudgebied (a reclaimed brookforest area North-East of the town of Groningen) serves as an example for the possibilities of combined historical and archaeological research concerning Wüstungen.
