Samenvatting

The Crustumerium Project (Italy). The summer of 2006 marked the first campaign of the Groningen Institute of Archaeology (GIA) at Crustumerium, a settlement on the river Tiber about 15 km north of the ancient centre of Rome. The GIA has committed itself to a long-term research project at Crustumerium, concentrating on the necropolis and the settlement dating from 900 to 500 BC. The team, directed by Prof. dr. P.A.J. Attema and dr. A.J. Nijboer, consisted of students of the department of Archaeology of the University of Groningen and doctoral researchers and supporting staff of GIA. The project is carried out in close collaboration with the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma (Prof. dr. F. di Gennaro). During four weeks in July, five tombs were investigated in the Monte del Bufalo cemetery. Among these were an intact 7th century BC loculus grave and a chamber tomb dating from the first half of the 6th century BC. GIA also started work on the restoration and conservation of metal and ceramic objects from tomb assemblages.
