Samenvatting

Roman deities in Friesland. A Roman statuette of a bronze warrior god, probably Mars, was discovered near Heerenveen, in the Dutch province of Friesland. The statuette, 7 cm in height, was probably brought back from England by a Frisian veteran from England. This bronze warrior and many other statuettes of Roman deities from Friesland may have been used in a traditional ritual. Although ritual deposits of artefacts and bones are known from the northern part of the Netherlands, the existence of depositions of Roman statuettes in or near farmhouses are only known from other parts of the Netherlands.
