Samenvatting

Surface collections of flint from the Stone Age in the area around Wildervank (Groningen). Reanalyses of surface collections of mostly mesolithic flint in the area around the town of Wildervank (in the reclaimed, formerly peat covered region in the SE part of the province of Groningen) have led to several interesting insights. The composition of the collections suggests better conservation of the sites than previously thought. The majority of the collections are small and comprise a limited number of typegroups. Small, but relevant artifacts, like points, are only known from sites where beside surveying also small test pits were dug. Especially in terms of Archaeological Heritage Management archaeology (AHM) this is a relevant conclusion, because it means that larger samples of material should be taken, to enable functional and chronological classification of sites. Several ‘larger’ collections (with more than 20 artifacts) have been analysed for possible functional differences, but these could not be established, probably due to the still rather small sample size. On the other hand, it could also mean that within the research area some degree of residential mobility was practiced during the Mesolithic.
