Samenvatting

A Hamburgian site near Sassenhein in Haren, with special attention given to the borers. The Hamburgian site at Sassenhein is situated along the eastern edge of the Drentsche Aa valley. On the basis of the typology of the points and the stratigraphical position of the finds in the top part of the Younger Coversand I, the site can be attributed to a late phase of the Hamburgian: the Havelte Group. Among the circa 290 tools, the presence of some ten strike-a-lights is remarkable. Borers of several types are the most numerous tool group. Both massive borers (Zinken) and fine borers were subjected to a use-wear study by the first author. Of twelve specimens with use traces, seven had been used for boring or grooving into bone or antler. Two more show traces of an unspecified hard material. One tool shows use-wear from an unidentified soft material (hide?). Zinken were possibly used to extract antler rods. One possible function of fine borers was to bore holes into bone needles.
